Reading time: about 3 minutes

Have you ever heard of rhinorrhoea? Rhinorrhoea is commonly known as 'runny nose' and consists of the discharge of liquid secretions from the nose. It is a common symptom that can occur at any time of the year due to various reasons such as allergies, infections or irritations. It is very rarely associated with serious conditions. Let's find out all about rhinorrhoea together.

Rhinorrhoea can occur in two forms: acute and chronic, each characterised by different types of nasal discharge. This secretion can vary from clear, liquid and watery to thick, purulent and greenish-yellow.

Two types of rhinorrhoea can be distinguished:

  1. Anterior: manifested by increased secretion from the nostrils.
  2. Posterior: occurs when nasal secretions move towards the posterior nasal cavities. In this situation, liquids may be swallowed or expelled through the mouth.

Runny nose: what are the possible causes of Rhinorrhoea?

The most common causes of rhinorrhoea are:

  • Colds.
  • Allergies and flu.
  • Viral infection.
  • Inflammation: due to irritants such as tobacco smoke, dusts and vapours.
  • Deviated nasal septum and presence of foreign bodies.
  • Cold and headaches.
  • Otitis and sinusitis.

Runny nose: What are the possible symptoms of Rhinorrhoea?

Rhinorrhoea, commonly known as nasal discharge, can cause breathing difficulties and sometimes lead to a stuffy nose and inflammation of the nasal mucosa. It is not a disease, but is rather a symptom that can be associated with several conditions. It rarely occurs in isolation; much more frequently it is accompanied by:

  • Nose drip and nasal congestion.
  • Headache and sore throat.
  • Ear pain and sneezing.
  • Itching in the eyes or nose.
  • Dizziness and fever.
  • Shivering and flushing.
  • Sickness and tiredness.

When it has to do with rhinorrhoea, the treatment depends on the underlying cause. If rhinorrhoea is caused by an allergy, antihistamines are usually recommended. On the contrary, if it is caused by bacterial or viral infections, there is a tendency to treat the symptoms with anti-inflammatories, nasal decongestants and nasal washes to temporarily relieve congestion and excess mucus while the immune system fights the infection.

Runny nose: tips and remedies

Dealing with rhinorrhoea effectively requires an investigation into the underlying cause. However, there are some general tips that can help. Avoiding irritants such as tobacco smoke and sudden changes in temperature can help. It is important to maintain an adequate level of hydration by drinking plenty of fluids and using a humidifier to keep the surrounding air moist. In addition, regular nasal washes or the use of saline sprays can help to clear the nostrils and relieve congestion.

Home remedies that can help reduce rhinorrhoea

  • Steam inhalation: in the form of suffumigation or a hot shower.
  • Warmth: for example by taking herbal teas, chicken soup or warm water with honey and lemon. They can help drain nasal secretions, allowing the nasal passages to clear.
  • Warm facial pack: helps to relieve pressure in the sinuses and make the mucus clearer, it is effective to put a cloth in warm water and place it on the nose and eyes for 10-15 minutes.

Other tips for managing rhinorrhoea:

  • Maintain adequate hydration by drinking plenty of fluids.
  • Avoid exposure to irritants such as tobacco smoke and air pollution.
  • Carry out regular nasal washes with saline solution.
  • Get enough rest to promote recovery and general well-being.

Usually, rhinorrhoea tends to resolve on its own. But if it continues for more than 10 days, it may not simply be caused by a common cold. In this case, it is best to consult your doctor to identify the underlying cause and plan appropriate treatment.
