Why do ears sometimes become red and hot?
Reading time: about 3 minutes
Have you ever noticed that your ears feel red and hot? It is not easy to explain this condition because there can be many causes
In this article, we will explore the different causes of hot, red ears.
Anyone can experience red, hot, swollen ears that are painful to the touch for a few days, and the causes of this condition can vary:
- Sudden increase in blood flow to the earlobes: caused by rapid changes from a warm to a cold environment, alcohol or spicy food consumption, hormonal changes (such as hot flushes during the menopause) and even certain medications.
- Infections such as otitis media: ear infections can be caused by germs and bacteria that enter the body through cuts or directly into the auditory system. With an ear infection, you may notice redness, swelling, and pain in the affected area.
- Bacterial infections: Cracks, insect bites or cuts can provide an entry point for microbes and bacteria that trigger an inflammatory reaction. This can cause severe ear pain and other systemic symptoms such as fever, chills, fatigue and swollen lymph nodes.
- Eczema and dermatitis
- Hormonal problems: the body's processes are regulated by hormones, so it is not unusual for the ears to become reddened in the event of a hormonal imbalance. This phenomenon is more common during adolescence and the menopause.
- Sunburn: it is important not to underestimate the fact that ears can burn in the sun, both in summer and winter. Sunburn can cause redness and burning.
- Strong emotions: anger, happiness and embarrassment are all feelings that cause our body to trigger this particular response, which lasts a few minutes.
Red, hot and swollen ears in children
In young children and infants, who are unable to express ear pain verbally, it is important to observe behaviours and gestures that may indicate pain. Redness, warmth to the touch and swelling can, in fact, be warning signs for certain conditions. When accompanied by a high fever, swollen ears can be a symptom of diseases such as mumps or acute otitis externa.
Irritability, inconsolable crying and constantly touching the ears can be signs of a problem of this type.
It is essential to consult your paediatrician as soon as possible to identify the problem and begin appropriate treatment. If you are unsure, it is best to avoid cold or hot compresses on the ears, washing or DIY remedies.
Remedies for red and hot ears
Hot and red ears are usually a sign of increased blood flow caused by emotions, temperature changes or hormones.
If one of these conditions is responsible for red, hot ears, the symptoms usually disappear within a few minutes or hours and do not require specific treatment, except for some natural remedies such as:
- Hot or cold compresses: hot compresses can soothe pain and reduce inflammation. Cold compresses can help reduce swelling and heat.
- Avoid moisture: it is not recommended to expose your ears to water to prevent inflammation and irritation. It is important to always dry your ears thoroughly after contact with water.
- Use earplugs: when in contact with water, it is advisable to use earplugs to protect the inside of the ear and thus avoid possible infections.
However, if you experience severe pain or if the redness and heat persist for more than a few hours, it is advisable to consult a doctor. This could indicate the presence of an infection or inflammation that requires specific treatment or medication.
